Tribute to Sgt Leland O WOOD (ASN 36851618) – E Cie / 517thPIR (01/08/1920 – 12/03/2005)
Son of Williams W WOOD and Carrie B ROLLING, Leland Oliver WOOD was born on August 1st, 1920 at Mt Pleasant, Michigan. He received his induction order from the Local Board No2 of Oakland County on April 24, 1943 and was ordered to join the lobby of the Poeples building in Oakland for May 13. He was inducted in the Army on Mai 13, 1943 and received ASN 36851618. He was rapidly volunteer for the paratroopers and was sent at Camp Toccoa before joining Fort Benning’s Parachute School where he was successfully qualified on September 25, 1943. He realized more than 30 training jumps.
He was send overseas with his Regimenal Combat Team and fought in Italy and jumped in France on August 15, 1944 (Operation Anvil-Dragoon). It seems he was later transferred to the 82nd AB Division and jumped on Nijmegen (Holland) on September 1944 (Operation Market-Garden). He has noted in his parachute log book : Buchenwald 1945 and Rhine May 1945 with no other information !
He was discharged on December 18, 1945.
Leland WOOD passed away on March 12, 2005 at the age of 84 years-old.
